Minutes to decimal hours converter

To convert minutes to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.50, and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. To go back, multiply the decimal part by 60.

Hours and minutes → decimal

= 7.75 hours

Decimal → hours and minutes

= 7:45 (7 h 45 min)

The formula: decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. So 7 h 45 min = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75.

Why payroll uses decimal hours

Pay is hours × rate, and you can't multiply 7:45 by $20. Converting to 7.75 hours gives 7.75 × $20 = $155. A common mistake is typing 7 hours 45 minutes as 7.45, which pays 27 minutes less — $9 short at $20 an hour, every time.

Converting decimal hours back to minutes

Multiply the decimal part by 60. 8.6 hours is 8 hours plus 0.6 × 60 = 36 minutes, so 8:36. 4.42 hours is 4 hours plus 0.42 × 60 ≈ 25 minutes.
