Overtime pay is the hourly rate × 1.5 × the hours over 40 in a workweek. At $22 an hour, 48 hours is 40 × $22 = $880 regular plus 8 × $33 = $264 overtime, for $1,144. Enter your rate and hours to calculate yours.

Regular (40 h)
$880.00
Overtime (8 h)

The overtime premium — the extra half on top of straight time — is $88.00. For overtime the FLSA requires, that premium is what counts as "qualified overtime" for the federal no-tax-on-overtime deduction (2025–2028).

The overtime formula

Overtime pay = regular rate × 1.5 × overtime hours. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must be paid at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek. The workweek is any fixed, recurring seven-day period the employer sets — not necessarily Monday to Sunday.

A worked example

An employee earning $22 an hour works 48 hours in a week.

  1. Regular pay: 40 hours × $22 = $880.
  2. Overtime rate: $22 × 1.5 = $33.
  3. Overtime pay: 8 hours × $33 = $264.
  4. Total: $880 + $264 = $1,144.

The overtime premium and no tax on overtime

The overtime premium is the extra half: in the example, 8 × $11 = $88. For overtime the FLSA requires, that premium is "qualified overtime compensation" for the federal income tax deduction that runs from 2025 to 2028, so employers need accurate weekly hours to report it. The guide to no tax on overtime explains what to track.

When the regular rate isn't the hourly rate

If an employee earns non-discretionary bonuses, shift differentials or works at two rates, the regular rate is a weighted average of everything earned in the week divided by hours worked — and overtime is based on that. The guide to calculating overtime walks through it. California employees also get daily overtime and double time: use the California overtime calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply the hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. Multiply that by the overtime hours to get overtime pay.

Is overtime after 40 hours or 8 hours a day?

Federally, after 40 hours in a workweek; there's no federal daily overtime. California, Alaska, Nevada and Colorado have daily overtime rules with different thresholds.

What counts as qualified overtime for no tax on overtime?

The premium portion — the half in time and a half — of overtime pay required by the FLSA. Overtime paid only because of a state rule or a company policy doesn't qualify. The deduction runs for tax years 2025 to 2028, with caps; check current IRS guidance.

Can an employer average hours over two weeks to avoid overtime?

No. Under the FLSA each workweek stands alone: 50 hours one week and 30 the next is 10 hours of overtime, even though the two weeks average 40.
