Time clock for roofing

Roofing crew time tracking, scanned at the truck.

Roofing crew time tracking records each roofer's hours on every job, even when the crew works three roofs in a week. With TrackBadges, the foreman scans each roofer's printed QR badge at the truck with any phone: once at the start, once at the end. Roofers need no app or smartphone, and each punch can be GPS-stamped to show where it happened.

What the time clock has to handle

  • A new roof every other day

Tear-off Monday, a reroof Wednesday, repairs Friday. The foreman's phone goes where the crew goes, and GPS stamps show where each scan happened.

  • Heat days that start at dawn

Crews start before 6 a.m. and stop when the heat does. A long midday break is just a scan out and a scan back in.

  • Prevailing-wage jobs

Public work needs accurate daily hours for every worker. Scans record them to the minute and export as a CSV for certified payroll.

How roofing crew time tracking works at the truck

The foreman's phone is the time clock. Pair it once, and it scans each roofer's printed QR badge at the truck: once at the start of the day, once at the end. Roofers need no app or smartphone, and the foreman sees every person as they scan.

A summer tear-off with a crew of six:

TimeWhat happens
5:45 a.m.The foreman scans the crew in at the shop while they load shingles and the dump trailer.
6:15 a.m.Drive to the house. The crew is on the clock, because they loaded at the shop first.
6:45 a.m.Tear-off starts.
11:00 a.m.Unpaid lunch in the shade: scan out, and back in at 11:30.
1:30 p.m.The heat calls it a day. The crew cleans up the site and drives the trailer back.
2:15 p.m.The foreman scans everyone out at the shop: 8 hours each.

With the GPS stamp on, every scan records where it happened, so you can see the crew was at the house without setting up a location for every roof.

Scan at the shop or at the roof?

Scan wherever the paid day starts. Under 29 CFR 785.38, if you require the crew to report to the shop to load materials or pick up tools, the drive from the shop to the roof is work time, and so is the drive back when they return the trailer. If roofers drive themselves straight to the house, the foreman scans them there. Either way, moving from one roof to another during the day is paid, so don't scan out between jobs.

Roofing crews work a new address every day or two, and setting up a location for each one isn't worth it. Make the shop a location and let GPS stamps show which roof each scan came from. For more, see tracking time across job sites.

Heat, rain and broken-up days

Summer roofing starts early and stops early. If the crew takes a long midday break off the roof and comes back at 4 p.m., scan them out and back in, and the timesheet shows two blocks on one day. Short water and shade breaks are paid, so stay on the clock for those. Some states have their own heat rules for outdoor work, with required rest and shade; follow yours.

Rain stops a job at 9:30 a.m.? Scan out, and the short day is on the record to the minute. If the foreman forgets, auto clock-out closes the shift after the limit you set and flags it for review; see forgot to clock out.

Prevailing wage and certified payroll

Public jobs and some commercial work pay prevailing wage, and federal Davis-Bacon jobs require weekly certified payroll. Those reports are built from accurate daily hours for every worker, and that's the part TrackBadges gives you: scans timestamped to the minute, exported as a CSV your payroll or certified payroll software can use. TrackBadges doesn't produce the certified payroll report itself, and it doesn't track trade classifications. If a worker splits a day between roofer and laborer work, record that split separately. This isn't legal advice.

Overtime in storm season

After a hailstorm the phone doesn't stop ringing, and a crew can work 60-hour weeks for a month. Set a 40-hour weekly threshold, plus a daily one if you work in a daily-overtime state like California, Alaska, Nevada or Colorado, and overtime is split out on every timesheet as the week goes. The overtime calculator shows the math.

What it costs

TrackBadges is free for up to 3 people with every feature. Pro is $9 a month for your first 3 people, plus $1.50 a month for each person after that, so a 15-person roofing company is $27 a month. Foremen's scanners are free and unlimited.

When it isn't the right fit

Many roofing crews are paid by the square. TrackBadges doesn't calculate piece-rate pay, although you still need hours worked for minimum wage and overtime on piece-rate employees, and that's what it records. Subcontracted crews you pay per job, who aren't your employees, don't need your time clock at all. And a solo repair tech driving between service calls is better served by a GPS app on their own phone. If you also run general construction crews, see time tracking for construction.

Set it up in three steps

  1. 01

    Add your crew

Name your business and paste in your team. No signup, sales call or card — make an account once you like it.

  2. 02

    Print their badges

Everyone gets a QR badge. Print them on plain paper or card stock. There's nothing for your crew to install.

  3. 03

    Scan with any device

A supervisor's phone, a warehouse tablet — any device can be a scanner. Scan a badge once to clock in, and again to clock out.

Frequently asked questions

How do roofing companies track crew hours across job sites?

Clock the crew in where the day starts, usually the shop or the first roof, and leave them on the clock between jobs. With TrackBadges, the foreman scans each roofer's printed QR badge with a phone, and the GPS stamp records where each scan happened.

Do roofers get paid for drive time from the shop?

If you require the crew to report to the shop first to load materials or pick up tools, yes: under 29 CFR 785.38, travel from that required meeting place to the job is work time. Driving between roofs during the day is also paid. The commute from home to the shop isn't.

Can TrackBadges handle roofers paid by the square?

It records hours, not squares. TrackBadges doesn't calculate piece-rate pay, but piece-rate employees still need accurate hours for minimum wage and overtime math, and the CSV export gives your payroll provider those hours.

Can I use TrackBadges on prevailing-wage jobs?

Yes, for the hours. Every worker's daily hours are recorded to the minute and export as a CSV for certified payroll. TrackBadges doesn't generate certified payroll reports or track trade classifications, so your payroll software handles that part.

What if the foreman forgets to scan the crew out?

Auto clock-out closes any shift left open after the limit you set, such as 12 hours, and flags it for review. You fix the time, and the edit history shows what changed and who changed it.
